It&#8217;s like looking inside a drum and seeing the skin at the bottom. \u00a0This is so that I can place white paper directly underneath and see the true colour I&#8217;m painting, because this is how it will appear as a finished picture.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">You may be able to make out faint vertical lines in the paint at the top of the sky. \u00a0That&#8217;s not on the silk, just the ridges on the paper underneath the silk showing through.<\/p>\n<p>You can see I underpainted the water a bit. \u00a0I then ironed that to seal it before beginning any embroidery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Also, you can see all my messy testing of paint colour around the edges. \u00a0These are my practice swings&#8211;I like to see the exact colour and wetness of the paint before I touch the &#8220;on stage&#8221; part of the picture, because it changes moment to moment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6831.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2535 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6831.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6831\" width=\"538\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6831.jpg 538w, http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6831-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 538px) 100vw, 538px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Above, a further stage. \u00a0I&#8217;ve begun sewing even though the sky isn&#8217;t finished yet. \u00a0I wanted to see how my thread colours would look. \u00a0In addition to off-stage paint scribblings, there is now off-stage thread securing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6833.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-2536 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6833.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_6833\" width=\"591\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6833.jpg 591w, http:\/\/www.threadedviews.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_6833-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 591px) 100vw, 591px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Almost finished. \u00a0I&#8217;ve ironed the sky part by now, to seal the paint. \u00a0When ironing these seascapes I&#8217;m careful not to touch the embroidered part. \u00a0I use a Sulky rayon which splits nicely into two wavy strands, which look like water already. \u00a0Ironing them would flatten out the waviness, and I don&#8217;t want that.<\/p>\n<p>Also, you can probably make out the horizontal line at the bottom of the hoop, which is the bottom edge of my white paper. \u00a0You can see the difference it makes.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re wondering why the picture isn&#8217;t centered in the hoop, it&#8217;s because before I start I always look for a nice clear, slub-free area of silk for any sky areas, and I must have found it at the top. \u00a0The part that ends up covered with thread doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4.5 x 6 inches, hand embroidery on hand-painted silk. \u00a0This is a trawler heading out somewhere between Vancouver Island and the mainland.
